Synopsis
The city of Agadez in Niger lies at the entrance to the Sahara. Until 2023, it was considered the European Union's security anchor in West Africa. Migration flows were monitored from here and police officers and border guards were trained. A virtual border ensured that only a few migrants with authorisation were allowed to continue their journey from Agadez towards the Mediterranean. In return, the citizens of the city were promised that youth unemployment, crime and corruption would be combated. Over a period of five years, ON THE BORDER traces the daily endeavours of three city dwellers against social and political grievances. A sensitive portrait of the Tuareg city at the crossroads of cultures that makes the failure of the pact with Europe visible.
