The Shaman and the Scientist

A film by Fritz Ofner

Synopsis

In 1962, the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann travelled to southern Mexico to meet the Mazatec shaman María Sabina. He wanted to investigate the therapeutic value of mind-altering substances. Sixty years later, this encounter forms the basis of a film exploring the healing effects of psychedelic drugs through the experiences of two protagonists. In Maria Sabina's homeland of Mexico, Luz hopes to overcome her nerve disorder with the help of magic mushrooms. Meanwhile, in a psychiatric hospital in Hofmann's native Basel, Saskia hopes to overcome her depression by taking part in a pioneering clinical trial involving LSD. What light do their experiences shed on the healing potential of psychedelic drugs?

A coproduction of Dokusan Film and Mira Film.
