Panopticon is a journey through the interwoven histories of cinema and colonialism.
Since the invention of the camera, the animal world has been used as a stage to allegorize the dominance of Western civilization over the colonized. The attitude with which these films were made over the decades has shaped generations of viewers and still forms the - mostly unconscious - foundation of our viewing habits today.
The film is based entirely on selected archive material from cinema and colonial history and makes rare, astonishing and shocking footage accessible. It invites viewers to engage in a dialog about the way we perceive and deal with images today.
